"Why the Best Engineers Don't Always Get Promoted" by Ainsley Clark

“Great work this year. You’ve really come along. Meets expectations. Let’s revisit promotion next year.” Sound familiar? Being the best engineer usually gets you in the door, but it's rarely enough to get you promoted. You can pump out tickets, solve difficult problems but still find yourself wondering why promotion never arrives. The people who progress fastest aren't always the strongest technically, but they know what success looks like in the role they are in. In this talk, I’ll draw on my own experiences to share the habits that can make the biggest difference to your tech career, including finding out what success looks like, asking for uncomfortable feedback and protecting your time. Sometimes it's not about playing the corporate game or pretending to be someone you're not. It's about making sure your effort is recognised. You’ll leave with small, practical actions you can use at interviews, during probation and throughout every stage of your career.
